Your hosts, Kelly Booz and Sari Beth Rosenberg, return to the AI Educator Brain to close out the Share My Lesson Virtual Conference with a timely look at what is happening right now in artificial intelligence and education.

For this final-night keynote, they are joined by Rebecca Winthrop of Brookings to explore key insights from the new Brookings report, A New Direction for Students in an AI World: Prosper, Prepare, Protect, which she co-authored.

Together, they will examine what educators, families, and system leaders need to understand about AI’s growing role in students’ academic, social, and civic development. Students are already using AI to brainstorm, create, and problem-solve. The opportunity is real. The risks are real, too. And as the Brookings research underscores, the choices we make now will help determine whether AI ultimately enriches or diminishes learning.

In this high-energy closing keynote, Kelly and Sari Beth, along with Rebecca, will guide participants through the good, the bad, and the algorithm, including two returning audience favorites:

Speakers

Rebecca Winthrop

Senior Fellow and Director, Center for Universal Education, Brookings Institution

Rebecca Winthrop is a senior fellow and director of the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution. Her research focuses on education globally, with special attention to the skills young people need to thrive in work, life, and as constructive citizens.

Winthrop works to promote quality and relevant education, including exploring how education innovations and family and community engagement can be harnessed to leapfrog progress, particularly for the most marginalized children and youth. She advises governments, international institutions, foundations, civil society organizations, and corporations on education issues. She currently serves as a board member and adviser for a number of global education organizations and lectures at Georgetown University.

She currently leads the Brookings Global Task Force on AI in Education and co-leads the Family Engagement in Education Network. She has served as the chair of the U.N. Secretary General’s Global Education First Initiative’s Technical Advisory Group, helping to frame an education vision that focuses on access, quality, and global citizenship. With UNESCO Institute of Statistics, she co-led the Learning Metrics Task Force that involved inputs from education professionals in over 100 countries to identify how to measure what matters in education systems. She has been a member of numerous other global education initiatives including the G-20 Education Task Force, the Mastercard Foundation’s Youth Learning Advisory Committee, the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Councils on education, and an education adviser to the Clinton Global Initiative.

Sari Beth Rosenberg is the co-founder of Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence and a member of the Board of Directors. She has been teaching U.S. History and AP U.S. History at a New York City public high school, the High School for Environmental Studies, for over 22 years and co-hosts the PBS NewsHour Classroom Educator Zoom Series. Rosenberg has been featured in various publications and multimedia platforms, including USA Today, NBC News, CNN, The TODAY Show, The Washington Post, Reuters, Parents Magazine, A+E/Lifetime, Travel Channel, TheSkimm, PBS NewsHour & various popular podcasts. She currently creates a History Chat series for Share My Lesson and co-hosts the AI Educator Brain Series for Share My Lesson. Rosenberg also serves as a Senior Advisor for Voters of Tomorrow. She is one of the Creators who has been credentialed to cover the 2024 Democratic National Convention this summer in Chicago.

Director of Share My Lesson, AFT

Kelly Carmichael Booz is the Director of Share My Lesson at the American Federation of Teachers, where she oversees the AFT’s PreK–12 resource platform serving nearly 2.3 million educators. She leads the organization’s digital professional development initiatives, including co-creating the award-winning AI Educator Brain series and the development of EdBrAIn, AFT’s new AI-powered teaching assistant. Kelly worked with OpenAI to create and launch EdBrAIn and led the effort to bring AI integration and custom course offerings directly into the Share My Lesson platform.

In addition to her work on AI, Kelly produces the AFT Book Club and the Vital Lessons series with Dr. Vin Gupta, curating timely and thought-provoking content for educators and non-educators nationwide. A strong advocate for civic education, Kelly was appointed by Governor Terry McAuliffe to the Virginia Standards of Learning Innovation Committee and served on the board of Virginia Civics, promoting constitutional literacy and student civic engagement.

Kelly was elected to the Alexandria City School Board in 2012 and is currently serving her third term, where she champions transparency, equity, and community-centered communication. She was named one of Alexandria’s “40 Under 40” by the Chamber of Commerce in 2017 and has held previous roles as Director of Civic Education at James Madison’s Montpelier and Manager of Teacher Programs at the Close Up Foundation.

She holds a Master of Education from the University of Virginia and a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College.

This webinar was not only…

This webinar was not only entertaining but eye-opening and genuinely thought‑provoking. It helped me think more critically about how AI intersects with equity, access, and student learning. I found myself reflecting on how to prepare my students to navigate AI tools safely and thoughtfully, especially as these technologies become more embedded in education. I plan to use what I learned to strengthen my classroom discussions around responsible technology use, to model transparency when using AI myself, and to explore ways AI can support personalized learning without replacing authentic student thinking.
