About This Lesson
Host productive conversations about disability and disability-themed media!
These tips set the stage for learning with disability-themed films and discussing disability in a respectful and accessible environment. They empower teachers to suggestions for lead productive conversations around disability that broaden perspectives, encourage empathy, and create safe spaces for participant engagement while respecting lived experiences.
We originally created this resource to use with our films that address disability, including:
- Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution (Disability History, Disability Justice, Disability Rights, with multiple representations of disability)
- Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Down (aphasia/dysphasia, traumatic brain injury [TBI])
- Like Stars on Earth (dyslexia/learning disabilities)
- The Power of Sports for Amputees (amputees, ableism, accessibility, inclusion)
- The Way Home (non-speaking [formerly mutism]).
You can also use these flexible guidelines with media of your choice.
The guidelines are a great tool to facilitate classroom discussions around disability for:
- Brain Injury Awareness Month (March),
- Developmental Disabilities Month (March),
- Limb Loss and Limb Difference Month (April).
- Learning Disability Week (June),
- Disability Pride Month (July),
- National Disability Independence Day (July 26),
- Terry Fox Day (August 4).
- Disability Employment Awareness Month (October),
- International Day of Person with Disabilities (December 3).
- Winter and Summer Paralympic Games (held shortly after the corresponding Olympic Games)
- Regional Special Olympics
