About This Webinar
America’s story is shaped by the countless actions—both large and small—that have moved us closer to a more perfect union. As we approach the 250th anniversary of our nation’s founding, this moment also calls for reflection on the ongoing work of sustaining a strong, inclusive democracy.
Join AFT President Randi Weingarten for a timely AFT Book Club conversation with educator, bestselling author and “America’s Government Teacher” Sharon McMahon, discussing her new book, We Are Mighty.
In this engaging and accessible work, McMahon brings to life the stories of everyday Americans—many often left out of traditional textbooks—whose courage, choices and persistence helped shape the course of our democracy. Through stories of teachers, young people and community changemakers, We Are Mighty reminds us that history is not only something we inherit—it’s something we continue to build.
Together, Weingarten and McMahon will explore how these stories connect to the realities educators and students are navigating today. At a time when questions about civic participation, access to knowledge and the role of public education are front and center, this conversation will examine how classrooms can remain spaces for inquiry, truth-seeking and engagement.
As part of the broader America250 effort led by AFT, the Albert Shanker Institute and Share My Lesson, this discussion will highlight how community members and educators across grade levels and subject areas can support civic learning—helping students understand our history in full, think critically about the present and see themselves as active participants in shaping the future.
Join us as we reflect on the power of storytelling, the importance of an informed and engaged public, and the role education plays in strengthening our democracy.
