About This Collection

Jazz Appreciation Month Lesson Plans and Activities for Music and History Classrooms

Each April, Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM) celebrates jazz as a uniquely American art form and highlights the enduring influence of legendary musicians such as Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Gerry Mulligan, and Tito Puente. For educators and families, it’s the perfect opportunity to introduce students to the rich history, cultural significance, and global impact of jazz.

To support this celebration, the Share My Lesson team has curated a collection of free PreK–12 Jazz Appreciation Month resources, including lesson plans, classroom activities, and teaching tools designed to bring jazz into music and history classrooms. These resources help students explore the origins of jazz, learn about pioneering artists, and understand how this powerful musical genre shaped American culture.

From interactive music lessons that break down jazz compositions to activities exploring the social and cultural movements behind the music, this collection offers engaging entry points for students of all grade levels. Students can analyze performances, participate in listening exercises, and investigate how jazz continues to influence modern music and artistic expression today.

By incorporating Jazz Appreciation Month activities into your curriculum, educators can help students build a deeper understanding of musical techniques, cultural diversity, and the historical roots of jazz. These lessons not only celebrate one of America’s most influential art forms but also inspire creativity, improvisation, and a lifelong appreciation for music.
