About This Lesson
In this unit, students will study Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” to understand why he wrote it and how he uses persuasion to defend nonviolent protest. Students will learn the three major rhetorical strategies—ethos (trust and credibility), pathos (emotions and human stories), and logos (logic and clear reasoning)—and examine how King uses each one to make his argument strong and convincing. Through guided reading, discussion, and structured practice, students will analyze key parts of the letter and gather evidence to support their ideas. The unit ends with students writing a five‑paragraph essay that explains how King uses ethos, pathos, and logos to persuade his audience and why his message still matters today.
