About This Lesson

This lesson examines the history of U.S. imperialism through the lens of Puerto Rico’s political and economic relationship with the United States. Students analyze key historical events (such as the Spanish-American War, the Insular Cases, and Hurricane Maria) and connect them to contemporary issues reflected in the Super Bowl LX Bad Bunny performance. By interpreting symbolism as historical evidence, students explore how culture can serve as a form of political commentary and deepen their understanding of how imperialism continues to shape Puerto Rico today.
