About This Webinar

In an era defined by global interdependence, today’s students need civic knowledge and skills that extend beyond national boundaries. This session brings together Retro Report and CFR Education, the educational arm of the Council on Foreign Relations, to help educators equip students with the tools they need to understand democracy, citizenship, and civic decision-making in a connected world. This session dives into a broadened approach to civic education that blends traditional civic knowledge with global affairs literacy.

Participants will explore how CFR Education’s nonpartisan, classroom-ready resources, including readings, simulations, videos, timelines, and discussion prompts, support students in analyzing contemporary global issues such as international conflict, trade, climate change, and human rights through a civic lens. These tools help students develop informed perspectives on how global events intersect with democratic institutions, public policy, and civic responsibility.

Complementing this work, Retro Report’s short-form documentaries  and classroom resources use historical case studies and investigative journalism to illuminate how past policy decisions, civic movements, and democratic institutions continue to shape today’s global challenges. Focusing on issues ranging from war powers and diplomacy to free expression and individual liberty, these resources model how history and current events can be paired to deepen civic understanding and relevance.

Designed for secondary and postsecondary classrooms, the session will showcase practical, inquiry-based instructional strategies that integrate multimedia sources to foster critical thinking and civil discourse. Educators will leave with ready-to-use lesson ideas, strategies for scaffolding analysis of complex issues, and access to free, standards-aligned multimedia resources that build key civic skills, including evidence-based argumentation, media literacy, and perspective-taking, empowering students to engage thoughtfully as citizens in a democratic society operating on a global stage.
