About This Lesson
In this lesson, students explore how everyday objects can reveal important insights about women’s history and social change. Using the history of pockets and purses as a starting point, students will examine how clothing design reflected historical expectations about women’s roles, mobility, and financial independence. Through discussion, source analysis, and a research-based project, students will investigate how ordinary items can serve as historical evidence of shifting gender norms and opportunities for women over time. This lesson encourages students to think like historians by analyzing material culture to better understand the relationship between daily life and broader social structures.
