The History of Women’s History Month
Women’s history was first recognized nationally in March 1981, when Congress authorized the celebration of Women’s History Week. In 1987, following advocacy from the National Women’s History Project, Congress designated March as Women’s History Month. Since then, each president has continued the annual tradition of honoring women’s contributions to American history.
Teach the Ongoing Story of Equality
Women’s History Month is an opportunity not only to reflect on past achievements but also to engage students in conversations about the ongoing struggle for equality and representation. Use these resources to foster critical thinking, encourage civic engagement and highlight diverse voices that have transformed society.
