About This Lesson

Students analyze a short excerpt from the new tween novel Lola Zola and the Lemonade Crush (www.lolazola.com) about a sixth grader who learns that her parents have been laid off. Using the reading graphic organizer, students infer the meaning of various quotes from Lola, her mother, and her father responding to the lay-offs. While Lola wants to know the truth, her parents try to downplay their worries and shield Lola from the truth.

Students can also use the graphic organizer to build a polished paragraph discussing the diverse reactions.
